@MSUDenverTennis: Roadrunners Fall in Final Day of PacWest Tournament

35th-ranked men finish sixth, women place eighth

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Both the 35th-ranked MSU Denver men and the unranked MSU Denver women wrapped up Pacific West Conference Tournament play with 4-2 defeats on Saturday.

The men dropped a decision to 37th-ranked Biola (Calif.) to finish in sixth place, while the women fell to Academy of Art (Calif.) to place eighth.

In the men's dual, Biola took control by winning the doubles point and the Roadrunners were unable to recover.

"Jeanloup (Auzias) and Billy (McDermott) got us off to a really good start in doubles (a 6-1 victory at No. 2), but we needed all the doubles teams rolling to secure the point," MSU Denver coach Josh Graetz said. "Once again the doubles point hurt us in singles play."

The 61st-ranked Auzias won 6-4, 6-4 over 38th-ranked Alexey Prokopchuk at No. 1 singles, and McDermott won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 for the Roadrunners' points.

"Jeanloup beat one of the better players in the country, which was pleasing, but overall Biola was hungrier than us today," Graetz said.

In the women's dual, MSU Denver won the doubles point with a 6-1 win from Marie Cool and Hanna Haber at No. 2 and a 6-3 decision from Lilly Stienemeier and Kayla Myburgh at No. 3. The Roadrunners also won unopposed at No. 6 singles.

"It was a high energy doubles point for the women and I thought we played really well," Graetz said. "Unfortunately Art was too good in singles. They jumped on us early and we didn't find a way to respond."
