@MSUDenverBSB: Nos. 19/13 Roadrunners Extend Winning Streak to 17, Set Program Record with 39th Victory

Stone blasts two homers, while Hayes dominant in ninth win

GOLDEN, Colo. – Catcher Colin Stone blasted two homers for five RBIs and pitcher Andrew Hayes twirled seven sharp innings as the battery for the Nos. 19/13 MSU Denver baseball team powered the club to its 17th consecutive victory, a 10-1 decision at Colorado School of Mines.

MSU Denver set the school single-season wins record while improving to 39-8 overall and 24-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The winning streak is an ongoing school record.

"I'm proud of the guys," MSU Denver coach Ryan Strain said. "I'm happy for them to be able to get the school record for wins, and we've got some opportunities to add to that. Winning isn't easy, and to be 39-8 is impressive. I told them they could enjoy it for about five minutes and then get ready to go for tomorrow because we're facing two good pitchers."

Hayes (9-1) gave up a first-inning run but little else, allowing one run on six hits – five singles and a double – with three walks and two strikeouts. Hayes became the seventh pitcher in program history with nine wins in a season, though one is teammate Jack Slominski, who will try to become the program's first 10-game winner in his next start on Sunday.

"That was a dominant performance by Hayes," Strain said. "They hit a couple of balls hard in the first inning when they scored on him and he pitched out of a couple of little jams, but he got stronger as the game went on.

"Then (Brady) McLean and (Ryan) DePew came in and threw BBs the last two innings. That was one of the better pitching performances we've had, because they've got some good hitters on that team."

Leading 2-1 after two innings, the Roadrunners hiked the lead to 5-1 on a three-run homer by Stone that touched off a five-run frame. Stone added his second homer, a two-run shot, for the game's final runs in the eighth.

"He hit the ball well," Strain said. "Those were two big ones for us. The second one was just a line drive to left center, really well-hit, and you just weren't sure if it was high enough to get over the fence."

Ross Smith, the Division II leader in doubles, broke the program's single-season record with his 28th, surpassing Reece Gorman's total from the 2008 season. Smith was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Tanner Garner, second nationally in batting average, was 3-for-5 and now stands at .469.

Zach Schuler and Zach Paschke each two hits as part of the Roadrunners' 14-hit attack.

The series continues with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
