LAS VEGAS, N.M. – No. 30 MSU Denver finished off its convincing sweep of New Mexico Highlands on Saturday, winning 16-0 to extend its winning streak to eight games.
"Overall, it's good to get a sweep," MSU Denver coach
Ryan Strain said. "Coming down here, it's always a good thing to get four wins."
The Roadrunners outscored the Cowboys 71-24 in the series, including 51-12 in the final three games and 29-5 in the last two. MSU Denver (30-8 overall, 15-5 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) has won 14 of its last 15 games.
After a scoreless first inning, MSU Denver pecked away with at least one run in each of the next five innings to build its lead to 9-0.
That was more than enough for
Jack Slominski (7-1), who struck out eight with no walks in five two-hit innings.
Carson Brown struck out three in two innings, and
Eric Cox and
Brad Helton each added a scoreless frame in a combined four-hit shutout.
"Jack threw the ball really well for his five innings and Brown did a nice job, too," Strain said. "Cox and Helton were good, too, and it was nice to see them combine for the shutout. Our guys really dominated today and didn't give them a chance to get going."
Zach Schuler mashed two homers,
Ross Smith added a homer of his own and
Jake Williams added three hits.
"We did enough to score 16 runs, which is a pretty good day most days," Strain said. "We just kind of did our thing. Overall the offense did a good job all weekend of scoring runs and continuing to put pressure on the other team."
