PUEBLO, Colo. – No. 7 CSU Pueblo scored a pair of first-half goals and held off MSU Denver 2-0 Thursday night in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's soccer opener.
The ThunderWolves (7-1-1 overall) scored at 12:19 and 24:28.
"I definitely think they're a good team, and they showed they are a good, complete team," MSU Denver coach
Nick Kirchhof said. "They defended really well and limited our chances – we didn't have much joy on the ball – and they were clinical with their chances."
MSU Denver dropped to 2-5-2 overall.
CSU Pueblo had advantage of 10-4 in shots and 4-2 in shots on goal, as well as 8-1 in corner kicks.
Jonas Votaw and
Cyrus Gulati had MSU Denver's shots on goal.
"It's not that we were overplayed," Kirchhof said. "We made mistakes on their goals, and we have to limit those. Overall we gave them problems. But we didn't stay with a runner, and we lost track of a good mark on a set piece.
"But they were definitely the better team tonight."
The Roadrunners play on the road again Sunday at 1 p.m. against UCCS (4-2-3, 0-0-1), which is receiving votes in the national top 25 poll.
