DENVER – MSU Denver finished with a flurry Saturday night in a 68-51 loss to Regis.
"I was really happy that we didn't give up," MSU Denver coach
Tanya Haave said. "That would have been easy to do. They're the defending conference champions, and we're clearly struggling – confidence-wise."
The Roadrunners picked up their intensity with full-court pressure defensively and sped up their offensive tempo while outscoring Regis 24-11 in the final 10 minutes.
Sophomore
Mikylah Espinosa scored 16 of her season-high 20 points in the fourth quarter.
"Mikylah really came on at the end," Haave said. "We're just asking so much of her, and she's still a young player."
Junior
Darla Hernandez also had season highs of eight points and 10 rebounds. She had six points and six rebounds in the final quarter.
"Darla had a good matchup in the post, and that was good for her to get some playing time and have some success," Haave said.
Regis (14-3 overall and 9-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) had 23 second-chance points on 18 offensive rebounds. Meanwhile, the Roadrunners (3-12, 2-8) made just 1 of 18 from 3-point range and 8 of 15 at the free throw line.
"The offensive rebounds hurt," Haave said. "And we've got to be able to make shots, and we've got to make the other team pay when we get to the line."
MSU Denver trailed just 14-13 after the first quarter, but was outscored 43-14 in the middle two periods.
"For a younger team like us, if you don't see the ball going in the basket, it becomes really hard to buckle down on the other end," Haave said.
