@MSUDenverWSOC: Roadrunners finish out regular season with a 1-1 draw vs CCU

MSU Denver finishes RMAC season as the third seed

LAKEWOOD – For the second straight game, MSU Denver women's soccer team fought to a draw, this time to a 1-1 tie with Colorado Christian on the road.

The draw puts MSU Denver at 9-3-6 overall with an 8-2-2 record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The tie puts CCU's record at 6-7-4 overall and 5-4-3 in the RMAC.

The Cougars scored the first goal of the game on their first shot of the game. Hannah Mares passed a ball down the right flank to Justine Moreau, who took a couple of touches forward and ripped a shot from about 20 yards out past MSU Denver goalkeeper Kylie Bach

Despite the one-goal CCU advantage, MSU Denver controlled possession in the first half and outshot the Cougars 12-1 with five of those coming on net. The Roadrunners also chipped in six corners, while not giving up any to Colorado Christian.

The Roadrunners best chance in the first half came in the 16th minute. Grace Johnson found Tessa Bretschneider from about 20 yards out, and with her back to the net, flicks a pass to Nicole Thompson, who then gives the ball right back to the streaking Bretschneider, who dribbles into the box, fires right on CCU's goalkeeper Alana Lopp, who then makes the save with the rebound opportunity cleared out of harm's way.

The Cougars took their 1-0 lead into halftime.

But MSU Denver would break through in the 57th minute. Janelle Arenibas on a corner kick, would play a ball that finds Lopp, and it looks as if she punches the ball toward the ground and into her own net. That would give Arenibas the game-tying goal for her second netter of 2024.

The Roadrunners outshot the Cougars 17-2 for the game and added a few more corners as well earning 11 to just one from CCU. Arenibas led MSU Denver with five shots, two of them coming on net. Bach gave up just the one goal and making one save in the draw.

This was the final regular season game of the conference season for the Roadrunners. They clinched the third seed and will host first round action of the RMAC Tournament this Sunday at Noon. The opponent is yet to be determined, so continue to follow RoadrunnersAthletics.com.
