@MSUDenverMBB: Businesslike Roadrunners Pick Up Victory at Adams State

Four players score in double figures in season-best shooting night

ALAMOSA, Colo. – MSU Denver had four players score in double figures, including another double-double from Mario Lacy, Jr., in a businesslike 93-81 victory Friday night at Adams State.

MSU Denver shot a season-best 58.2 percent from the field (32 of 55) and hit 6 of 15 from 3-point range.

The Roadrunners improved to 13-6 overall and 7-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Adams State dropped to 6-13 and 4-9.

"Road wins are always good wins, and conference wins are always good wins," MSU Denver coach Dan Ficke said. "It doesn't matter how you do it, as long as you get the job done."

MSU Denver next faces Nos. 4 and 15 Fort Lewis, 18-2 and 13-1.

Brayden Maldonado scored 22 points while making 3 of 6 from 3-point range and all seven of his free throws, Caleb McGill had 20 points while hitting 7 of 10 from the field, and KJ Garrett had 14 points on 5 of 8 shooting and handed out four assists.

Lacy, who made 5 of 6 from the field, had 13 points and 10 rebounds for his 28th career double-double, seven of which have come this season.

"Brayden was great at the start of the game and the start of the second half, KJ was really good, and Caleb was really good once we got him the ball in his spots," Ficke said. "And Rio was a big factor with another double-double."

Though Adams State shot 50.8 percent from the field (30 of 59), the Grizzlies made just 2 of 19 from 3.

"We're going to have to be better defensively against Fort Lewis," Ficke said.

The Roadrunners led from nearly start to finish, building their advantage to as many as 15 points, at 77-62, in the second half.

Adams State made a late first-half run and actually pulled ahead briefly in the final two minutes. The game was tied 39-39 at the break.

It was 52-52 with 15:14 left in the game, and the Grizzlies were within 57-56 with 13:05 left, but MSU Denver took control with a 13-0 run.

"We got off to a great start, but then they did a good job of weathering the storm and keeping it a game at halftime," Ficke said. "Our guys did a good job in the second half of being better defensively and executing better offensively. They switch and trap all over the place and that got us out of rhythm at times, but in the end we did what we were supposed to do."
