@RoadrunnerSB: MSU Denver Wraps Weekend with Wild Win

No-hit bid included working around five errors

CONROE, Texas – Freshman Natalie Romero pitched 4 2/3 no-hit innings and Audrey Burt got the final four outs for the save as MSU Denver scored five second-inning runs and held on for a 5-3 victory Sunday over Texas Woman's to finish the opening weekend of the season at 2-3.

"We aren't leaving here with the record we would've liked, but in the two wins we got, we played tough teams in close games and were able to finish," MSU Denver coach Annie Van Wetzinga said. "That has been a focus for us coming into the season."

Romero pitched around difficulty all game, walking six and hitting a batter while also pitching around four of the Roadrunners' five errors.

Texas Woman's scored an unearned run in the fifth when Romero issued a bases-loaded walk and Van Wetzinga called upon Cheyenne Prieto to finish the inning. Texas Woman's finally got its first hit in the sixth and got another unearned run off Prieto before Van Wetzinga called upon Burt to finish the inning, striking out the only batter she faced with the bases loaded.

Burt gave up a leadoff single in the seventh, but got a strikeout and a double play on a lineout to end the game.

"It was a wild game with a lot of ups and downs," Van Wetzinga said. "I was happy with our three pitchers, especially Natalie as a freshman working through some tough breaks and baserunners.

"To have Audrey come in and be able to close out the game when they had a lot of energy and was big also. There was some pressure mounting and she kept her cool and executed pitches."

MSU Denver jumped ahead as two runs scored on an error by the Texas Woman's second baseman. Kami Grammerstorf added another run on a fielder's choice, then Shelby Robb delivered a two-run single for a 5-0 lead.

"Our big offensive inning, we got solid base hits and were able to use our speed," Van Wetzinga said. "We need to understand that's who we are, and build off that."

Burt finished the tournament 1-1 with one save and a 3.32 ERA, including a complete-game shutout of No. 8 Texas-Tyler, the Patriots' only loss in four games.

Robb batted .357 (5-for-14) with a team-best four RBIs for the weekend.
