DENVER – MSU Denver had big early leads in each game but couldn't hold on either time in a disappointing doubleheader sweep Thursday by Biola (Calif.).
The Roadrunners led the opening game 10-1 after three innings but lost 16-15, and then had a 12-4 lead after an 11-run second inning in the nightcap only to go scoreless the rest of the game and lose 14-12. The second game, scheduled for seven innings, went eight.
"In my 19 years of coaching, that's by far the worst day I've been a part of," MSU Denver coach
Ryan Strain said. "Twenty-nine earned runs (out of 30), in two games, you can't win that way. And after the first inning of the first game we only got a couple of hits and after the second inning of the second game we only got one hit and didn't score."
Andrew Graham was 4-for-8 with a double, a homer and five RBIs for the day, while
Caleb Albaugh was 4-for-8 with a double, two triples and five RBIs.
MSU Denver dropped to 1-4, despite Thursday's two losses and two other losses the first weekend of the season when leads slipped away in the ninth inning.
The teams wrap up their series Friday at the Assembly Athletic Complex in a doubleheader that has been moved up to 11 a.m.
"We'll just have to go back to work tomorrow," Strain said. "The good news is we've got Jack (Slominski) and (Brad) Helton pitching for us."
