March is National Athletic Training Month (NATM), and we at MSU Denver wanted to spotlight our four amazing athletic trainers! We asked each of our trainers a series of questions varying from highlights of their job to their favorite places they were able to travel to. The first trainer we will be spotlighting is Roberto Chavez.
Question: Why did you get into the profession?
A: Helping others; that is primarily the reason I pursued this career. Since starting my profession back in Summer 2017, I have built my philosophy over the fact on how much I enjoy helping others directly. From immediate care to the rehabilitation aspect, these interactions between myself and patients (student-athletes) are what inspire me to this day!
Question: What is your favorite part of the job?
A: One of my favorite aspects of being an athletic trainer is the ability to experience so much diversity! I enjoy establishing rapport with every patient and understanding who they are and their background. I have met some extraordinary patients and listened to amazing stories about cultures, beliefs, and traditions.
Question: What has been your favorite place the job has taken you?
A: Â One of my most memorable excursions is when we (my men's lacrosse team and I) took a trip to Georgia and Alabama. While in Montgomery, we partook in a tour at the Civil Right Memorial Center. Although the tour lasted about two hours, it was the lasting impact that seldom makes me feel I never left.
Question: What is your favorite part about working at MSU Denver?
A: As one of the assistant athletic trainers at MSU Denver, a favorite part of my profession is being able to collaborate with my colleagues! Here at MSU Denver, I can formulate ideas and ask for input from three other experienced athletic trainers. Chelsea, Rachel, and Heather – each one of them possesses a unique perspective to athletic training and I could not have asked for a better team!
Question: Obviously, travel is a part of the job... What is your go-to travel activity when traveling with the team?
A: My go-to activity on the road is listening to music from all types of genres and eras. I typically will start with my go-to playlist and branch off from there. Anything from 50's Rock and Roll to modern R&B, I enjoy broadening my music pallet and finding hidden songs to add to my many playlists.

Thank you to our athletic trainers for all you do for our athletes!
