DENVER – MSU Denver had a one-player Senior Night for a one-of-a-kind player.
Tosjanae Bonds, the Roadrunners gritty guard, was honored in a pregame ceremony before a season-ending 88-66 loss to Adams State at the Auraria Event Center.
"The battling that she's done, though the injuries, and then her growth as a person off the floor and as a player on the floor have been tremendous," MSU Denver coach
Tanya Haave said. "I'm really happy for her and proud of her. The battle and perseverance, that's what you look for in players."
Bonds' career was likely at its peak at the end of her sophomore season in 2022, with her tour-de-force performance in leading the Roadrunners to the RMAC Tournament championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament, where she was once again outstanding in an overtime loss.
Still, she has battled courageously through the past two seasons with her all-out effort and determination. She has career totals of 695 points, 391 rebounds, 131 assists and 172 steals.
"It's been crazy," Bonds said of her journey. "From where I was before to where I am now, I'm proud of myself. I'm proud of this program and I've really enjoyed everyone. It's sad to know our season is over."
Bonds had a large group of family and friends join her for the ceremony.
"It was exciting, but also sad, but also exciting," Bonds said. "I get to see these people every day, but I don't get to have them all in one area. Two people here hadn't seen any of my games yet. So it was exciting to see them come and support me."
Once the game started, playing an Adams State that finished in a four-way tie for first in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, MSU Denver played a quality first quarter, trailing 21-20 at the break.
MSU Denver, which started its strong 6-4 finish to the season with an overtime win at Adams State on Feb. 2, was outscored 28-6 in the second quarter and could never fully recover.
"They haven't lost since we beat them (nine straight wins)," Haave said. "I think we probably got them awake a little bit, because they've been on a mission. We were able to keep that pace for a little bit, but we just couldn't maintain it."
Mikylah Espinosa completed her strong finish to the season with another 19 points, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range.
Ashlyn Yow, who also finished on the upswing, scored 14 while making 2 of 5 from long range.
Bonds scored 10, and
Brianna Sealy had 10 rebounds.
The Roadrunners wrap up at 9-18 overall and 8-14 in the RMAC for 10
th place, but also had four losses in games they were in position to win the final minute – three of those in the final 10 seconds.
"It's been a season of growth for sure," Haave said. "New roles for players, and we still have players in roles they aren't quite ready for right now. We'll be addressing that. But from January on, there's been so much growth. We were just very, very, very, very, very, very, extremely young."
