@MSUDenverBSB: CSU Pueblo Escapes with Win in Final Game of Series

Roadrunners get another quality start from pitching staff

PUEBLO, Colo. – MSU Denver rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning, but CSU Pueblo pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Roadrunners 3-2 Saturday, wrapping up the teams' four-game series.

"We pitched really well, and I feel bad for (Dylan) Webber, but we weren't good enough on offense," MSU Denver coach Ryan Strain said. "We hit quite a few balls hard early in the game and couldn't get things to fall, and we had some chances late where we didn't have good at-bats.

"It's frustrating because we handled their better arms (earlier in the series), and their fourth starter went out early, but we weren't very good on offense."

MSU Denver (17-17 overall, 8-8 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) had been going for a sweep, but instead settles for the series victory that pushed it past the ThunderWolves (18-14, 7-9) in the league standings.

"It's always good to get a series win, especially on the road against a good team, so you feel good about that, but when you win the first three you've got to finish it off," Strain said. "You've got to have that killer instinct. Because when you let a team hang around until the last at-bat, that can happen to you."

The Roadrunners once again got outstanding starting pitching, with a quality start (at least six innings pitched while allowing three earned runs or less) from Webber, who allowed two runs on five hits in a six-inning no-decision.

In the series, starters Jack Slominski, Brad Helton, Recihle Arcilise and Webber all put together quality starts while compiling a combined 2.16 ERA, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 21 hits, with 10 walks and 22 strikeouts, in 25 innings.

"All four of those guys gave us really good starts, against a team that came in hitting .330-something," Strain said. "If we can continue to do that, I like our chances."

Trailing 2-0 entering the seventh, MSU Denver tied the game with back-to-back RBI singles by Jesse Velders and Jake Williams.

Williams, Andrew Biddle and Tyler Tobey all had two-hit games for the Roadrunners.

MSU Denver returns home to the Assembly Athletic Complex for a four-game, Alumni Weekend series against New Mexico Highlands from Friday through Sunday.
