@MSUDenverBSB: Slominski Saves Series Finale

Series split keeps Roadrunners tied for third in RMAC

ALAMOSA, Colo. – MSU Denver pitcher Jack Slominski finished what he started.

Slominski, the Roadrunners' No. 1 starter, had a rough Friday outing, lasting only three innings. But he told coach Ryan Strain that he was available out of the bullpen if needed Sunday, and Strain went to him to get the final out for the save in a 9-7 victory over Adams State, giving the Roadrunners a split of the four-game series.

Slominski told Strain during the middle of Sunday's game that he was available to pitch and he started getting loose in the bullpen in the eighth inning.

"We were hoping it wouldn't get to that point where we needed him, but that team had a knack for getting what seemed like a million ground-ball hits – especially with two strikes," Strain said. "But to their credit, they kept putting balls in play."

Dylan Webber turned in a quality start – allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits while walking four and striking out five in seven innings.

"Webber was good," Strain said. "He was able to command the zone, and he only got in trouble when he gave up three (in the fourth inning) after walking the first two guys."

Carson Brown gave up a run in the eighth and then had the Grizzlies down to their last strike twice in the ninth before yielding run-scoring hits that made it 9-7. Slominski also had Adams State down to its last strike before giving up a hit that brought the tying run to the plate, but he got a fly out to end it and pick up his first career save.

MSU Denver, 10-3 over its last 13 games, improved to 23-19 overall and is tied for third in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at 14-10. Adams State dropped to 18-20 overall but holds onto second place at 13-7.

Leadoff hitter Andrew Biddle was 3-for-6 with two RBIs, while Zach Schuler and Jake Williams each had three RBIs – Schuler had a two-run homer that made it 3-0 in the third inning. In the eighth, Schuler's sacrifice fly made it 7-4 and Williams followed with a two-run double for a 9-4 advantage.

"We hit a lot of balls hard the whole series," Strain said. "I've never seen a team have that many lineouts."

ROADRUNNERS MILESTONES: Williams' three RBIs gives him 176 for his career, passing Pat Maxwell (1995-98) and Jordan Stouffer (2008-11) for third place on the program's all-time list. Schuler now has 170 RBIs and ranks sixth. … Schuler is now tied with Williams for second place on the program's career home run list with 43, two behind Rusty Befus (1988-92), who had 45. … Caleb Albaugh had two doubles and now has 48, tied for seventh with Brian Edwards (2001-03) in program history. … Albaugh now his 235 career hits to rank fourth all-time – he needs 13 to pass Befus' record of 247.
