@MSUDenverVB: Roadrunners Sweep Top Ranked Tampa to Advance to First Ever National Title Game

MSU Denver will take on Concordia St. Paul Saturday Night for Division II Title

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — MSU Denver Volleyball delivered a historic performance Friday night, sweeping top-ranked Tampa 3–0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-21) at the Sanford Pentagon to advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship for the first time in program history.

The Roadrunners improved to 31-3 overall, extended their winning streak to 22 matches, and handed Tampa its first loss of the season after the Spartans entered the match a perfect 32-0. MSU Denver's 31 wins this campaign is now a program record, they recorded 30 wins previously three times and most recently in 2022.

From the opening serve, MSU Denver set the tone, jumping out early in each set and never allowing the nation's top-ranked team to seize momentum.

The Roadrunners hit an impressive .308 as a team, committing just nine attack errors in three sets, while their block and defensive pressure consistently disrupted Tampa's rhythm.

After building a late cushion in the opening set, MSU Denver closed strong to take a 1-0 lead, then carried that confidence into a dominant second set where they limited Tampa to a .197 attack percentage.

Junior Megan Hagar was a catalyst throughout the night, making her first start since the beginning of the season and leading the team with 12 kills on a .321 hitting percentage to go with seven digs and two service aces.

Alyssa Boyte continued her standout postseason run, posting nine kills on a blistering .409 clip while leading all players with five total blocks. Freshman Brooke Gennerman added nine kills, while Karyna Werley chipped in seven kills and 14 assists.

The Roadrunners never let Tampa mount a serious run in the third set, answering every push with timely kills and key defensive stops. Their front line limited the Spartans to a .243 hitting percentage, while the back row kept rallies alive to fuel transition offense. In total, MSU Denver recorded 45 digs and eight block assists, continuing a postseason trend of dominant, disciplined defense.

With the win, MSU Denver not only secured its first national championship appearance, but also became the first RMAC program to reach the Division II title match since Nebraska Kearney in 2005. It also marks the first national title game appearance for MSU Denver Athletics since the 2012-13 men's basketball team finished as national runner-up.

The Roadrunners will now turn their attention to Saturday's national championship match, where they will face No. 2 seed Concordia-St. Paul at 4 p.m. MT, with a chance to make even more history.
