DENVER — MSU Denver women's basketball put together one of its most complete performances of the season Thursday night, going toe-to-toe with No. 3-ranked Lubbock Christian before ultimately falling 80-73 at the Auraria Events Center.
The Roadrunners (3-8, 2-2 RMAC) came out sharp and confident against the nationally ranked Lady Chaps (12-1), jumping out to a 26-17 lead after the first quarter. MSU Denver shot an impressive 64.7 percent from the field in the opening period and knocked down four three-pointers, setting the tone early and forcing Lubbock Christian to play from behind. The strong start carried into the second quarter, as the Roadrunners matched the Lady Chaps point-for-point and went into halftime holding a 49-40 advantage.
Lubbock Christian responded after the break, using defensive pressure and timely shooting to swing momentum in the third quarter. MSU Denver was limited to eight points in the frame, allowing the visitors to edge ahead by two entering the fourth. Despite the shift, the Roadrunners continued to battle and stayed within striking distance deep into the final period, trading baskets and answering runs from one of the nation's top teams.
Four Roadrunners reached double figures in scoring, led by Mikylah Espinosa's 18 points. Jadyn Watts continued her strong presence on the glass, pulling down 10 rebounds to go with 16 points. Madison Johnson turned in a standout shooting night, knocking down a career-high four three-pointers and finishing with a season-high 12 points. Nevaeh Millard added 14 points off the bench to round out the balanced offensive effort.
Despite the loss, the Roadrunners' performance against the No. 3 team in the nation showcased their growth and competitiveness. The strong start, balanced scoring, and continued rebounding success highlighted a team capable of matching up with elite opponents as the season progresses.
