DENVER – The Roadrunners scored eight runs in the final two innings to defeat Fort Lewis 8-0 at the Assembly Athletic Complex.
Game two of the Monday doubleheader was cancelled due to inclement weather.
After taking the first two games of the series on Sunday, MSU Denver completed the three-game sweep of the Skyhawks to improve to 8-4 on the season with a 3-0 record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Complex. Fort Lewis drops to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in the RMAC.
Natalie Romero got the start for the Red and Blue and once again dominated from the circle. After earning the win on Sunday, she again went the distance, this time giving up just one hit in seven innings and earning the shutout. She struck out three Skyhawks after striking out a career-high 10 yesterday.
The win was Romero's fourth on the season and she retired the final 19 batters of the game. She now sits with an amazing 1.17 ERA in seven appearances.
Runs were hard to come by on both sides in the frigid February air of Denver, Colorado. MSU Denver didn't get their first base hit until
Alexia Boring's single in the fourth inning. Fort Lewis got their lone hit in the first inning and never saw a base runner over the final six innings.
But the Roadrunners found their juice in the sixth when they recorded six runs on seven hits, finally getting to the Skyhawks starting pitcher.
Janessa Esquibel and
Hannah DiFabio started the inning with back-to-back singles. Then head coach
Annie Van Wetzinga had the next three batters record bunts, which brought in the first two runs of the game.
First
Alexia Boring bunted Esquibel and Difabio over to scoring position, and then Coach Van brought in power bat
Jaiden Geist to pinch hit. But instead of swinging for the fences, the senior put down the bunt for the suicide squeeze, which brought in Esquibel, and Geist reached first base safely. Then
Miki Berg also put down the suicide squeeze, which scored the second run, and she reached safely.
Adriana Bueno didn't bunt for the fourth straight batter, instead putting a single into center field bringing in Geist for a 3-0 lead. Berg also scored on the play on a fielding error by the center fielder.
Katie Maney and
Natalie Shellhorn finished off the scoring in the sixth with back-to-back doubles to put the score at 6-0.
Giest and
Jenna Medhus both had RBI doubles in the seventh inning to give the Roadrunners the final 8-0 win. The squad finished with eight runs on 13 hits.
MSU Denver will be back right back at the Assembly Athletic Complex this weekend taking on always-tough Colorado Mesa for a four-game set that begins on Saturday, Feb 22.
