DENVER — MSU Denver women's basketball dropped an RMAC contest on Saturday afternoon, falling to Black Hills State as the Roadrunners moved to 4-10 overall on the season. The game featured multiple momentum swings early, but a decisive run in the second half ultimately proved too much for MSU Denver to overcome.
The opening half was tightly contested, with neither team able to create much separation. The Roadrunners traded baskets with the Yellow Jackets throughout the first quarter and into the second, as the lead changed hands several times and the game was tied on multiple occasions.
MSU Denver found offensive rhythm behind aggressive guard play and strong interior defense, keeping the game within a possession for much of the half before heading into the locker room still very much in striking distance.
The turning point came midway through the third quarter, when Black Hills State began to stretch the floor and capitalize on transition opportunities. A sustained scoring run allowed the Yellow Jackets to build their largest lead of the night, as MSU Denver struggled to convert on consecutive possessions. Despite the deficit growing, the Roadrunners continued to compete and forced turnovers to stay engaged defensively.
MSU Denver clawed back into the game with a late push in the fourth quarter that trimmed the margin and put pressure on Black Hills State down the stretch. However, the visitors answered with timely baskets to halt the comeback attempt and secure the win.
Individually, Mikylah Espinosa delivered a standout performance, leading all Roadrunners with 26 points, including two three-pointers, while consistently attacking the lane.
Nevaeh Millard was the only other MSU Denver player in double figures, finishing with 17 points and providing a steady offensive presence.
On the defensive end, Keira Mitchell made her impact felt in just her second game of the season, recording a season-high four blocks to anchor the paint.
The Roadrunners will look to regroup and bounce back as RMAC play continues next weekend.
