WICHITA, Kan. — The MSU Denver baseball team continued its strong start to the 2026 season Friday afternoon, knocking off Newman 5–3 in its first road game of the year at McCarthy Field. The win marks the fourth straight victory to open the campaign for the Roadrunners.
MSU Denver struck first on the mound, as Jake Syverson delivered a dominant outing to earn his first win of the season. The right-hander worked six innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out nine and facing the minimum through multiple frames.
Newman's only early run came unearned in the second inning before Syverson settled in and controlled the game.
The Roadrunners broke through offensively in the fifth inning. Noah Wicks singled to spark the rally, and Michael Deitz followed with a RBI triple to center field to tie the game at 1–1. Moments later, Brayden Oram delivered a run-scoring single to bring Deitz home, giving MSU Denver a lead it would not relinquish.
MSU Denver added breathing room in the sixth inning. Marques Abulhosn, who continues to shine in the leadoff spot, reached base for the third time and scored on an RBI single from Brooks Rasmussen. Rasmussen then swiped second and came home on an RBI single by Erubiel Ortiz, pushing the Roadrunners' advantage to 4–1.
Newman chipped away late, cutting the deficit to one in the eighth, but MSU Denver responded once again. In the ninth, Alek Martinez drilled an RBI double to right field to plate an insurance run, capping off a multi-hit day for the lefty.
Offensively, the Roadrunners finished with 12 hits, led by multi-hit performances from Noah Wicks, Blake Wilson, and Alek Martinez. Abulhosn went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored, setting the tone at the top of the lineup.
Out of the bullpen, Carter Swan slammed the door to earn his first save of the season. Swan recorded all four of his outs via strikeout, navigating traffic and showing poise in the final inning to secure the victory.
MSU Denver and Newman will be back in action Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. as the Roadrunners look to keep their perfect start intact.
