DENVER — MSU Denver's seven-match unbeaten streak came to an end Sunday afternoon, as Fort Lewis scored twice in the opening seven minutes and held on for a 2-1 victory at the Assembly Athletic Complex.
The Roadrunners fell behind 2-0 before Colin McKenna put MSU Denver on the board in the 33rd minute, converting a penalty kick for his first goal of the season and the second of his collegiate career.
Fort Lewis struck first in the fourth minute, with Raul Baptista Filipe finding the net off an assist from Alexandros Papakonstantinou. Just three minutes later, Francisco Pinto doubled the Skyhawks' advantage with a goal assisted by Baptista Filipe.
McKenna's penalty kick cut the deficit in half heading into halftime, giving the Roadrunners a chance to rally in the second half.
MSU Denver created several opportunities after the break, finishing with six shots, including two on target. Jace Starling and Riley Galloway each put a shot on frame, while Dominic Miller made two saves in goal.
The Roadrunners received another opportunity late when Fort Lewis was reduced to 10 players following a red card in the 80th minute. MSU Denver was unable to find the equalizer, however, as the Skyhawks preserved the one-goal victory.
Fort Lewis finished with eight shots to MSU Denver's six and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The loss moves the Roadrunners to 4-2-3 overall and 1-1-0 in RMAC play, snapping a seven-match unbeaten run.
MSU Denver will return to action Thursday, hitting the road to take on Colorado School of Mines.
