Jones begins his second season with the MSU Denver Baseball program in 2018-19.
Prior, he served as the Lead Varsity Coach in the Evergreen High School Cougar Baseball program. Sam began his coaching career as an Assistant Coach for the Denver Bombers in the Mile High Collegiate Baseball League where he worked with hitters and coached First Base.
In his 3 year high school coaching career, Sam was instrumental in guiding the Evergreen Varsity Cougars to two of its most successful seasons in school history- in which the Cougars made State Elite 8 appearances in 2015, 2017 as well as a 2017 State Champion Runner-Up finish.
Sam is a product of the Evergreen High School Cougar Baseball Program having played from 2006-2010, where he was a Varsity starter all 4 years. He posted a combined .438 batting average during that time period, highlighted by a sophomore campaign in which he hit .491 and finished 9th in the Jefferson county 4A Conference and 32nd in the State (All Classes) in batting average.
After his high school career, Sam went on to play collegiate baseball at Colorado Christian University, an NCAA Division II school in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). As a freshman at CCU, Sam posted a 1.000 fielding percentage and as a sophomore finished 4th on the CCU squad in On Base Percentage, while hitting over .400 during the second half of that season. Sam had his best collegiate year during his Junior season, hitting .305 in RMAC play, posting a .418 On Base Percentage (ranked 23rd in the RMAC) and recording 10 HBP (ranked 6th in the RMAC). His .981 fielding percentage was the highest of all second basemen in the conference that year. His best series of the year came against #4 Nationally Ranked Colorado Mesa University in which he went 6-12. As a senior Sam was named Team Captain and voted Best Teammate by his CCU baseball peers. His best series his senior year came against Nationally Ranked conference foe New Mexico Highlands University going 5-11. Sam was also named to the RMAC All-Academic Team his Junior and Senior years.
In collegiate summer league play, Sam posted a .395 batting average in the Rocky Mountain Baseball League and a .392 batting average in the Colorado Collegiate Baseball League (now the Mile High Collegiate Baseball League). As a member of The Denver Generals, he was named the starting second baseman for the North Division in the CCBL All Star Game.
Sam is a summa cum laude graduate (3.91 GPA) of Colorado Christian University with a degree in History. He holds a Master’s Degree in physical education from the University of Arkansas. He teaches History on a full time basis at Evergreen High School. Sam, his wife Kayla and their Great Dane puppy Attie reside in Lakewood, Colorado.
