Scott Groom begins his sixth year as Metropolitan State University of Denver's associate athletic director for compliance in 2017-18.
At MSU Denver, he oversees NCAA and RMAC compliance, sport program supervision and serves as game day administrator.
Prior to joining the Roadrunners, he spent 24 years in the Western State athletic department as a coach and administrator.
Groom completed his two-year term as national chair for the NCAA Division II track & field and cross country committee in 2013-14 as well.
Groom spent his last 15 years at WSC as compliance coordinator, including a promotion in 2004 to assistant athletic director for internal operations and compliance. In his most recent position, Groom oversaw NCAA compliance, home events, student-athlete welfare, personnel decisions and budget.
He also served as a track coach at Western State, including head coach from 1991-2002. He led the Mountaineers to two indoor and three outdoor track Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships, and a pair of top-five national finishes at the NCAA indoor championships. He coached 85 All-America athletes and 10 individual national champions, while earning RMAC Coach of the Year honors four times. He was also the 1993 region coach of the year. In addition to success on the track, his athletes earned 52 USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.
Prior to his WSC coaching career, Groom spent five years as a high school track coach at three different high schools in the Colorado Springs area.
Groom earned his bachelor's degree in 1982 from Eastern Illinois University in physical education and his master's in 1989 from Western State in guidance and counseling. At EIU, he played football and was a member of the 1978 national championship team.
The native of Streator, Illinois, Groom graduated from Woodland High School. He is married to his wife, Deanne.
