Calvin Tang begins his third year on the Roadrunners staff. His responsibilities include post development, recruiting, academics, scouting, and summer camps. During the 2008-2009 season, he assisted the Roadrunners to a 27-4 overall record, including a school record 18-1 conference finish. The team captured the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. The Roadrunners finished the season ranked No. 8 in the nation, including a season-high 19 game-winning streak that was snapped in the NCAA Tournament by defending national champion Winona State. Metro State’s record since Tang has been on staff is 46-16.
Prior to his arrival at Metro State, Tang spent four years as an assistant coach at Sierra Community College in Rocklin, California under Coach John Fusano. At Sierra, he assisted with practice planning, player development, travel and scouting and also designed the strength and conditioning program. In his last two seasons, he helped the Wolverines compile a 41-23 record including two consecutive state playoff appearances. In 2005-2006, Sierra ranked 9th in Northern California, finishing with 21 wins. During his time, 95 percent of the players earned their AA degree and transferred onto a four-year university, including seven Division I transfers.
Tang has also conducted various camps throughout the West Coast including Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and California, serving as a master teacher for Northwest Basketball Camps (NBC). In 2008, he spent one month in the Philippines with William Jessup University coaching and competing on a basketball mission tour.
Tang played at Sierra College, where he was a team captain and named All-Bay Valley Conference, along with Student-Athlete of the Year in 2002. He also prepped at Arlington High School in Riverside, Calif., under coach John Seydel. A three-year varsity player, he was voted team captain, Most Inspirational, and named Riverside County Defensive Player of the Year in 2000.
Tang earned his bachelor’s degree in social science and minor in sports coaching from California State Sacramento in May, 2007. In 2006, he was the recipient of the Asian American Leadership Award demonstrating a commitment for leadership in the Asian Pacific American community. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree in kinesiology from Fresno Pacific University.
