Nick Maas will enter his fourth season as head coach of the Roadrunners cross country and track in 2016. This will be his sixth year with the program. He served as the assistant track coach for jumps and sprints from 2011-13. He also assisted with the cross country team.
In 2015-16, MSU Denver entered the season in the No. 13 spot on the USTFCCCA Top-25 poll. The men’s cross country team placed No. 20 at the NCAA National Championship and fourth in the NCAA South Central Region Championships. The women’s team finished 12th place at the NCAA South Central Regional.Â
In 2014-15, he coached 14 all-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference athletes and three All-Americans. Maas led the women's cross country team to a 23rd-place finish at the NCAA Championships. The women's team also finished 54th at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, led by All-America middle-distance runner Breanna Hemming. Hemming and Michael Warburton both earned second team All-America in outdoor track in the women's and men's 1,500 meters.
The team's sprinters and jumpers had one of their best seasons in school history. Freshman Robert Carlson became the first jumper to qualify for nationals, finishing 15th at the NCAA Indoor Championships. He and Jon Clarke combined for five all-conference awards between indoor and outdoor track.
Both the men's cross country and women's track teams had grade point averages over 3.0 for the school year. Hemming led the way for the women, earning RMAC academic athlete of the year in indoor and outdoor track and the Summit Award for all three sports.Â
In his first year at the helm in 2013-14, Maas guided the cross country and track programs to perhaps their best year in school history. For the first team ever, the Roadrunners scored points at the national meet in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track on both the men's and women's sides. The women's cross country team completed its best season ever, placing eighth at nationals behind All-Americans Hemming and Janelle Lincks, the first female cross country All-Americans in school history. The men's team was not far behind, placing 13th with Nick Kadlec and Kirk Harvey earning All-America honors. Hemming and Lincks helped the women's distance medley relay team become the first female All-Americans in school history for indoor track. Harvey also earned All-America in the 3k during the indoor season. Hemming (3000m steeplechase) and Hemming (1500m) were also All-Americans during the outdoor season.
Metro State had a very young cross country squad in 2012 after graduating three of the top five runners from 2011 on the men's side and returning just one women's runner. Despite the young team, the Roadrunner men finished sixth at the RMAC championships and sent two individuals to nationals in men's sophomore Nick Kadlec and women's freshman Janelle Lincks. The year got better from there as the young runners continued to grow.
The men's indoor track team sent Darius Reed back to nationals where he finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles. The women's team sent the distance medley relay team, which finished 10th in a school-record time. The four runners were the first four women's runners to compete at NCAA indoor nationals in school history.
During the outdoor season, Breanna Hemming was named RMAC freshman of the year and athlete of the meet at the conference championships after winning both the 800 meters and the 1,500m. She became the school's first women's NCAA All-American, finishing third in the 1,500m. Janelle Lincks joined her just hours later, finishing fourth in the 5,000 meters. Reed placed second in the 110m hurdles.
During his first season, Maas' sprinters and jumpers had loads of success on the track. Both of Metro State's all-conference runners during the indoor season were sprinters as Derek Fiorini earned those honors in the 400 and Darius Reed did so in the 55 hurdles. Reed also broke indoor school records for the 55-and-60-meter hurdles.
The outdoor season was even more successful for Maas' athletes. Reed became the school's first non-distance runner to compete at nationals, finishing third in the 110 hurdles to earn All-America honors. Reed broke the school record in the 110 hurdles by nearly a second and improved his time from the beginning of the season by more than a second. The 4x100 relay team also broke a school record.
Maas joined Metro State with seven years of coaching experience at the collegiate level, including the previous four as the head cross country and assistant track coach at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. In his four years, he coached 28 all-conference athletes, 14 national qualifiers and eight All-Americans at the Division III school. He also led both his indoor and outdoor teams to top-10 finishes at nationals in 2009.
Prior to BV, Maas was the head cross country and track coach at Mount Marty College in Yankton, S.D., in 2006-07, coaching four national qualifiers. He also served as a graduate assistant at Northern Iowa University for two years prior to Mount Marty.
Collegiately, he ran four years of cross country at Buena Vista and was a three-year team captain in track and two-year team captain in cross country. He was a three-time Iowa Conference placewinner in track. Maas spent one year competing at Division I Northern Iowa while working on his master's degree. In 2005, he earned all-Missouri Valley Conference and helped UNI to conference championships in indoor and outdoor track. Maas was a member of the third-fastest 4x800 relay team in school history.
He earned his bachelor's degree from BV in 2004 in education and his master's degree from UNI in 2006 in exercise physiology. Maas, a native of Tama, Iowa, resides in Littleton with his wife, Mandi.
