Tyler Cline

Tyler Cline is entering his fourth season as an assistant coach at Metro State in 2011-12. During his three seasons, the Roadrunners have gone 44-16 in RMAC games and won the 2011 RMAC regular season title. Cline is the recruiting coordinator, works with the post players, organizes camps and pre- and postseason workouts, arranges team travel, and coordinates player academic progress.

Cline and head coach Tanya Haave led the Roadrunners to their most successful season in school history.  Metro State went 30-3 overall, including 21-1 in the RMAC to win its first regular season RMAC title since 1998.  The team set numerous school records, including wins, conference wins, longest winning streak (15), longest home winning streak (18, still active), scoring defense (51.4), total rebounds (1,353) and games played (33).

Metro State had just four total previous NCAA Tournament appearances before 2011 and had not won a game in the postseason.  The team advanced all the way to the Elite Eight, winning three games to capture the Central Region championship.  It was one of the most dominant defensive squads in the nation, finishing second in Division II in scoring defense and rebounding margin.  Haave added Cassondra Bratton to the team during the fall and the senior went on to earn all-region honors and win Central Region Tournament MVP honors.

Cline and the coaching staff, under head coach Linda Lappe, put together tremendous efforts to get winning records from their squads in 2008-09 and 2009-10, overcoming youth, injuries and other obstacles. In 2009-10, the team dismissed the only two post players on its roster early in the season for disciplinary reasons, leaving the team undersized and low on numbers. After losing a starter to an injury halfway through the season, Metro State posted a 5-1 record over its final six games with just eight healthy players on its roster. The season came to an end with a loss to No. 4 Fort Lewis in the RMAC Shootout semifinals.  FLC ended up reaching the national championship game. Earlier in the season, before the two players were dismissed from the team, the Roadrunners upset Fort Lewis 75-65 on Dec. 4 when the Skyhawks were ranked third in the nation.

The Roadrunners also overcame two season-ending injuries during the preseason to post a winning conference record in Cline's first season in 2008-09. Despite just one senior on its roster, Metro State finished 12-7 in the RMAC and reached the RMAC Tournament, before falling to eventual champion and fourth seed Colorado State-Pueblo in the first round.

Prior to arriving at Metro State, Cline spent the 2007-08 season as a graduate assistant at Angelo State University. While at Angelo State, Cline worked on-court with both the guards and the posts and also helped with recruiting and film exchange. He helped the Belles to a 23-9 record and their seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

Cline has also coached all levels of AAU girl's basketball in West Texas with the Hoop 10 organization. In 2006, Hoop 10 won a BCI national title.

A native of Cotton Center, Texas, Cline prepped at Cotton Center High School. He left as the school’s all-time leading scorer, a three-time all-state performer, and a two-time district most valuable player.

Cline earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise sports science from West Texas A&M in 2007 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sports science. Cline resides in Denver with his wife, Heather, and dog, Champ.
