Metro State Volleyball Wins Fifth in a Row, Defeats Regis

The Metro State volleyball team defeated crosstown rival Regis, 3-1, Tuesday evening in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play at the Auraria Events Center. The 'Runners prevailed by scores of 25-17, 25-22, 28-30, 25-12.

The home team came out strong in the first set trailing just once at 1-2, before going on a 7-2 run to take command at 8-4. Regis would close the score to 12-11, but the 'Runners went on another 10-4 run to put the set away. MSCD hit .364 in the game led by Amanda Cook with five kills and Julie Causseaux with four.

The second set remained close early, but Metro State pulled out to an 18-13 lead behind strong serving from Cook. Regis closed within two at 20-18, but the 'Runners capitalized on a mis-communication play from the Rangers to take the set.

The third game proved to be the most exciting of the match. It appeared the 'Runners had the match in hand, leading 18-14, but Regis stormed back and went on a 7-1 run to take the lead 21-19. The Rangers reached set point at 24-22, but a kill from Bri Morley and an attack error by the Rangers tied the score at 24-24. From there the teams would trade points, with both teams having opportunities to close it out. Back to back MSCD hitting errors finally gave Regis the set, 30-28.

The teams again traded points early in the fourth set, but with Metro State leading 15-12, Cook went back to serve and finished off the game with 11 consecutive points.

The match also marked the return of middle blocker Anna Mapes. The junior had been sidelined with an ankle injury since the third match of the season. She posted eight kills and four blocks in her return.

Cook paced the offense with 14 kills and 15 digs and Bri Morley added 15 kills, nine digs and four service aces.

The 'Runners will now prepare to host No. 10 Nebraska-Kearney, Friday night at 7 p.m. The two teams are atop of the RMAC-East Division with undefeated records (MSCD at 5-0 and UNK at 4-0).
