DENVER, Colo. -
The No. 18 Metro State volleyball team swept Western New Mexico 25-11, 25-22, 25-20 on Friday evening at the Auraria Event Center.  The win improved the Roadrunners to 12-4 overall and 5-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Mustangs fell to 8-8 overall and 6-2 in the RMAC.

It was "Dig for the Cure" night at Metro State to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.  Metro State wore pink jerseys in support of the cause.  The Roadrunner coaches and staff donated 25 cents for each dig by the Roadrunners in the match.  They finished with 37 digs as a team.

#Bri Morley# and #Emily Greenhalgh# led the offense with a match-high 11 kills each.  #Anna Mapes# continued her consistent efficiency this season with eight kills, hitting .538 (8-1-13).  #Gabe Curtis# had 36 assists.

Defensively, #Amy Watanabe# led the team with 12 digs.  Middle blocker #Julie Causseaux# set a career high with 10 digs and also added five kills and three aces.

Metro State hit .286 (43-15-98) for the night and held WNMU to just .135 (29-17-89).  The Roadrunners also had nine aces and 6.0 team blocks.

For the second night in a row, the Roadrunners came out on fire, taking an 11-3 lead in the first set.  With the score tied at 3-3, a #Lisa Jones# kill started an 8-0 run as Causseaux delivered two aces and Metro State forced three attack errors on the Mustangs.

Metro State led 16-7 and then ran off six more points in a row to lead 22-7.  Morley finished the set with an ace as the Roadrunners hit .450 (11-2-20) in the first set, compared to -.045 (6-7-22) for the Mustangs.  Morley had four kills and two aces during the first set as well.

The second set was much more even.  Trailing 13-11, Metro State scored four consecutive points, sparked by a Causseaux kill, and then consecutive kills from Mapes and another from Greenhalgh with Causseaux serving.  The Roadrunners hit .268 (17-6-41) in the second set, while WNMU enjoyed its best offensive output of the night at .237 (15-6-38).

The Roadrunners jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third set as the Mustangs made three attack errors.  But WNMU bounced back with six points in a row to take a 6-5 lead as the Roadrunners made four attack errors.

Metro State trailed 17-15, but consecutive kills by Jones tied the score and start a 4-0 run to put the Roadrunners in front for good at 19-17.  They clung to the two-point advantage at 22-20 before closing the night with three straight points.

The Roadrunners will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Colorado College for a 7 p.m. match in Colorado Springs.
