DURANGO, Colo. - The Metro State men's soccer team fell 1-0 to No. 4 Fort Lewis on Friday in Durango. The Skyhawks improved to 14-1-0 overall and 11-0-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Roadrunners fell to 9-5-2 overall and 6-3-2 in the RMAC.
Euan Purcell scored for FLC in the 59th minute after he deflected David Barden's cross.
Neither team scored another goal in a very physical contest. Metro State was called for 18 fouls, compared to nine for Fort Lewis. Seven cards were handed out in the game, including five against Metro State.
Dominique Griffith (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill H.S.) made six saves for Metro State. Fort Lewis goalkeeper Zane Wells stopped both shots on goal by the Roadrunners. FLC held a 14-4 edge in shot attempts.
The Roadrunners put together a solid first half against one of the nation's best defenses with all four of their shot attempts coming before halftime. Fort Lewis attempted five in the first half.
But the Skyhawks outshot Metro State 9-0 in the second half to control play. FLC had an 8-0 advantage on corner kicks in the game.
Metro State will look for its 10th win of the season on Sunday at Mesa State.
