Box Score
DURANGO, Colo. - The No. 21 Metro State men's soccer team fell 3-1 to No. 2 Fort Lewis in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament championship game on Sunday in Durango. The Roadrunners' season will likely come to an end following the loss with a 12-7-2 overall record. The Skyhawks improved to 19-1-0 this fall.
Jamie Cunningham scored just six minutes into the game for Fort Lewis on a header off Tom Settle's corner kick.
Steven Emory (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins H.S.) evened the score in the 34th minute as he headed
Jack Belanger (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny H.S.)'s free kick into the net.
However, that was just one of Metro State's three shots in the game as the Roadrunners were outshot 22-3.
Fabian Kling scored in the 40th minute as he kicked in another corner kick from Settle. Euan Purcell scored the game's final goal in the 66th minute on a header off a pass from Jeff Jennings.
Dominique Griffith (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill H.S.) made seven saves for Metro State.
Metro State entered the week ranked No. 3 in the region behind Fort Lewis and Colorado Mines. Metro State is 0-2-1 against CSM this season, so moving ahead of the Orediggers is unlikely. Only the top-two teams in the region will make the NCAA Tournament.
Griffith, Emory,
Scott Grode (Gilbert, Ariz./Basha H.S.) and Belanger were all named to the all-tournament team for Metro State.
The Roadrunners say goodbye to six seniors this season.
David Roesener (Altus, Okla./Faith Christian H.S.),
Pat Laughlin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Prep),
Jamey King (Salida, Colo./Salida H.S.),
Tyler Hambrick (Northglenn, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.),
Mike Martinez (Thornton, Colo./Horizon H.S.) and
Sam Rolph (Denver, Colo./Mullen H.S.) all were likely on the field for the final time of their collegiate careers on Sunday.
