DENVER, Colo. - Freshman
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) scored 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for his first career double-double as No. 17 Metro State defeated Adams State 90-74 at home on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Grizzlies fell to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the RMAC.
Morse hit 7-of-10 from the floor and 8-of-11 at the free throw line. He had 19 points and 10 rebounds at halftime, but was slowed in the second half with foul trouble and picked up his fifth foul with three minutes left.
Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) scored 24 points to lead Metro State and added seven rebounds.
Brian Minor (Clovis, Calif./Clovis H.S.) had 19 points, five rebounds and four steals.
Donte Nicholas (Washington, D.C./Oakton H.S.) scored 16 points before leaving with an injury in the final minutes.
Metro State maintained a 5-point lead through much of the first half, stretching the lead out to 10 twice with the Grizzlies battling back to hold the Roadrunners to a 40-35 lead at the break. Metro State shot just 35.9 (14-for-39) percent in the first half, but forced 14 turnovers and committed just three.
The Roadrunners led by seven points at 53-46 with 15 minutes left in the second half when they went on an 8-0 run over two minutes that included dunks from Evans and Minor to lead 61-46 with 13 minutes left.
Leading 69-58 with seven minutes to play, Metro State scored eight points in a row once again to seemingly put the game away as it led 77-58 with five minutes remaining.
However the Grizzlies cut the lead to 10 with just under two minutes to play at 81-71 as things got chippy. Leading 84-71 with just over a minute left, Nicholas went up for a dunk on a fastbreak and was pulled down from behind by Nick Fox, causing Nicholas to land on his head as he was pulled off the rim. Nicholas appeared to be knocked out and laid on the ground for several minutes, but eventually walked off the court under his own power. Fox was assessed a flagrant foul and was ejected from the game.
Josh Turner (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest H.S.) hit both free throw attempts for Nicholas.
Metro State will travel to Western State next Saturday, Dec. 12 for an 8 p.m. game in Gunnison.
