LAS VEGAS, N.M. - Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) scored a school record 40 points on Friday to lead Metro State to a 97-79 win at New Mexico Highlands. The win improved the Roadrunners to 12-2 overall and 5-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Cowboys fell to 9-6 overall and 2-4 in the RMAC.
Evans hit 17-of-29 from the floor and 4-for-4 at the free throw line. His 17 field goals were also a single game record. He added a career-high eight steals and seven rebounds and did not have a turnover. Evans had 24 points at halftime after shooting 11-for-18 from the floor.
Three players held the previous school record of 38 points. Gene Edwards set the record on Jan. 5, 1990 against New Mexico Highlands. Ralph Rivers and Luke Kendall have each matched the record, with Kendall doing it most recently on March 10, 2002, at South Dakota State.
Brian Minor (Clovis, Calif./Clovis H.S.) added 17 points, followed by
Donte Nicholas (Washington, D.C./Oakton H.S.) with 15 and
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) with 10. Nicholas' fourth double-double of the season was overshadowed by Evans, as Nicholas pulled down 11 rebounds and shot 4-for-6 from the floor and 7-for-8 at the line. Minor hit 5-of-8 from the floor and 7-for-9 at the line, while Morse was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor and added eight rebounds. #A.J. Flournoy# chipped in with six points and six rebounds, while
Glenn Miller (Sacramento, Calif./Foothill H.S.) scored seven points off the bench.
Metro State's 97 points were the most for the Roadrunners since scoring 103 at Colorado Springs on Feb. 9, 2008. Metro State also hit 84.6 (22-for-26) percent at the line, a season high free throw percentage. The Roadrunners outrebounded NMHU 42-25 and forced 22 turnovers.
Metro State opened the game with an 11-0 lead after back-to-back baskets by Evans and built a 35-15 lead at the 10-minute mark of the first half. The Roadrunners led by as much as 24 points and held on to a 55-34 halftime lead after shooting 55 percent in the first half and holding the Cowboys to 42 percent.
The Roadrunners continued to pour it on, leading by 26 points at 89-63 with 4:29 left, their largest lead of the game.
Metro State will travel to Colorado State-Pueblo for an 8 p.m. game on Saturday. The game will be broadcast live on Mile High Sports Radio at 1510 AM.
