Brian Minor (Clovis, Calif./Clovis H.S.) hit two free throws with seven seconds left to lift Metro State to a 66-64 victory over Colorado State-Pueblo on the road on Saturday night. The win solidified Metro State's first place ranking in the RMAC East Division standings, moving the Roadrunners to 13-2 overall and 6-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSUP fell to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the RMAC.
The Roadrunners led by five points with two minutes left, but could not maintain the lead. A layup by Kris Lawrie and a free throw by Marc Williams cut the lead to two at 62-60 with 1:45 to play.
Donte Nicholas (Washington, D.C./Oakton H.S.) proceeded to hit two free throws for Metro State to stretch the lead back to four with 55 seconds on the clock, but Chris Busch answered with a rare 4-point play, burying a 3-pointer and drawing the foul. After he hit the free throw to tie the game at 64-64 with 39 seconds left, the Roadrunners ran the clock under 10 seconds before Minor was fouled with seven seconds left. After he connected on both attempts to put Metro State back in front, a last second 3-point attempt by Williams missed.
A night after scoring a school record 40 points,
Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) again led Metro State by scoring 17 points, including hitting 3-of-6 from the outside. But Evans was one of several Roadrunners to struggle at the free throw line, going 0-for-2 as Metro State hit just 9-of-19 (47.4 percent) at the line.
Nicholas finished with 16 points and was a bright spot at the stripe, hitting 6-of-8 free throw attempts, including those two clutch ones in the final minute. Nicholas led the Roadrunners with seven rebounds. #A.J. Flournoy# also reached double figures with 10 points and he, Nicholas and Minor each finished with a team-high four assists.
Metro State forced 17 turnovers and committed just 10, but CSUP stayed in the game with a strong game on the glass, outrebounding the Roadrunners 38-33. It was just the fourth time this season an opponent has had more rebounds than Metro State.
Metro State will continue conference play at Regis on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
