Metro State Wins Ninth in a Row

Box Score

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
The No. 22 Metro State men's basketball team held on for an 81-68 victory at UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday for its ninth consecutive win.  The Roadrunners improved to 15-2 overall and 8-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Mountain Lions fell to 6-11 overall and 4-5 in the RMAC.

Metro State survived, despite a rare poor shooting night from its starters as the five starters combined to shoot just 17-of-55 (30.9 percent) from the floor.  But four reserves combined to shoot 8-for-11 for a season-high 27 bench points.

Donte Nicholas (Washington, D.C./Oakton H.S.) led the way and an excellent all-around game, despite the poor shooting, scoring 16 points with eight rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks.  He hit just 4-of-13 from the floor, but made 7-for-9 at the free throw line.  Brian Minor (Clovis, Calif./Clovis H.S.) added 11 points before fouling out, followed by Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) and #A.J. Flournoy# with 10 each.  Morse also had eight rebounds.  Flournoy added five assists, five steals and four rebounds.

Shakir Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey H.S.) poured in a season-high nine points off the bench and Glenn Miller (Sacramento, Calif./Foothill H.S.) had eight points and nine rebounds.  Tommy Earl (Casper, Wyo./Natrona County H.S.) and Tucker Long (Pocatello, Idaho/Century H.S.) each had five off the bench.

Starter Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.), who entered the game averaging 27.0 points in his past three games, was held to a season-low seven points on Saturday after shooting just 3-of-11 from the floor.  It was the first game this season he had been held under 10 points.

Metro State used a late 7-0 run in the first half to take a 10-point halftime lead at 40-30.  The Roadrunners stretched their lead out to 20 points with seven minutes left to hold on for the win.

They outrebounded UCCS 43-31 and shot 79.4 (27-for-34) percent at the line for the game.

Metro State will host Colorado Mines on Friday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m.
