DENVER, Colo. - Metro State jumped out to an 18-point halftime lead and coasted to a 92-76 victory over Western New Mexico on Saturday afternoon at the Auraria Event Center. It was the fourth straight win for the Roadrunners, who improved to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference to remain in first place in the East Division. The Mustangs fell to 4-8 overall and 3-2 in the RMAC.
#A.J. Flournoy# carried Metro State offensively, pouring in a career-high 24 points, shooting a perfect 9-for-9 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the outside as all five starters scored in double figures. He added five rebounds and two steals. Flournoy had 20 points at halftime, surpassing his previous career-high of 14 points with over five minutes left in the first half.
Donte Nicholas (Washington, D.C./Oakton H.S.) continued his dominance on both ends of the court, dropping 18 points with 12 rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and one steal. The junior guard has been named RMAC East Division four of the six weeks the award has been given out this season, including each of the past three weeks.
Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) rebounded from shooting just 1-of-7 in the first half to add 15 points, three assists and three steals. He shot 6-for-10 in the second half.
Brian Minor (Clovis, Calif./Clovis H.S.) added 13 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.), despite playing just two minutes in the first half with foul trouble, added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Tommy Earl (Casper, Wyo./Natrona County H.S.) finished with six points off the bench.
Metro State dominated the slugfest that saw 54 fouls called, including 30 on the Roadrunners, and four players foul out. It shot 52.3 (34-for-65) percent from the floor, including 7-for-17 (41.2 percent) from the outside. The Roadrunners also enjoyed a 47-39 rebounding edge. The 30 fouls whistled on them were the most since 35 on Dec. 16, 2007, in a loss at Adams State.
The Roadrunners jumped out to a 14-5 lead less than five minutes into the contest on Saturday. Leading 34-24 with 5:35 left in the half, Metro State went on a 10-2 run to lead 44-26 with under three minutes before the break and held on to a 48-30 halftime lead.
The Mustangs chipped the lead down to eight at 61-53 with 11 minutes left in the game, but Evans caught fire late, helping Metro State build a 25-point lead at 88-63 with four minutes left as he scored 11 points during a 25-8 run.
Metro State will travel to New Mexico Highlands for an 8 p.m. game on Jan. 15.
