LAS VEGAS, N.M. - No. 18 Metro State swept New Mexico Highlands on the road on Thursday, 25-15, 25-16, 25-22. The win was the fourth straight for the Roadrunenrs, who improved to 14-5 overall and 8-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Cowgirls fell to 4-15 and 0-10.
Julie Causseaux (Dumas, Texas/Dumas H.S.) had 16 kills, a season-high for the junior, as she hit .619 (16-3-21), also a season-high. Her 16 kills were just one shy of her career high of 17 set in 2008.
Shayne Kovach (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument H.S.) also had career highs of 10 kills and a .600 (10-1-15) hitting percentage. Defensively,
Ngoc Phan (Lone Tree, Colo./Cherry Creek H.S.) recorded a career-high 20 digs.
The Roadrunners had nine aces and hit .370 for the match. Highlands surprisingly played a strong match efficiency-wise despite getting swept, committing 26 total errors, compared to 22 for Metro State. However, the Cowgirls hit just .190 in the match.
Metro State trailed 8-7 in the first set before running off 14 of the next 16 points. Ten of the points during the run came on kills.
Leading 20-15 in the second, Metro State scored four straight points with
Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) serving and won 25-16.
Highlands led 11-9 in the third, but Metro State battled back with four of the next five points. However, the Roadrunners could not get a run of more than two consecutive points the rest of the match.
Metro State plays at Colorado State-Pueblo at 7 p.m. on Friday.
