DENVER, Colo. - Metro State held Chadron State scoreless over the final seven minutes to go on to a 69-48 victory on Friday at home in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action. The Roadrunners closed the game on a 20-0 run over that span to improve to 19-5 overall and 12-4 in the RMAC, while the Eagles slipped to 8-15 overall and 6-10 in the RMAC.
CSC played the Roadrunners tough all night, trailing by just three at the half at 27-24. That was the lowest first half point total for Metro State since scoring 26 in a loss at Mesa State on Nov. 28.
Metro State built a nine-point lead eight minutes into the second half, but the Eagles widdled that lead down to one with 7:15 left at 49-48. The Roadrunners nailed 11-of-12 at the line during the final seven minutes and 23-of-25 in the second of to earn the win.
Donte Nicholas (Washington, D.C./Oakton H.S.) led all scorers with 18 points, hitting 10-of-11 at the line, and added six rebounds.
Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) added 13 points in his first start since Jan. 30.
Brian Minor (Clovis, Calif./Clovis H.S.) and
Shakir Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey H.S.) each scored nine. Johnson's nine tied a career high and he added five blocked shots, the first time a Roadrunner has had five blocks since Ben Ortner on Feb. 26, 2005. He also had a team-high seven rebounds. Minor had five assists and five rebounds.
No CSC player reached double figures in scoring as three players had a team-high eight points.
Metro State shot a season-best 89.3 percent at the free throw line, hitting 25-of-28. The Roadrunners also shot 42.9 percent from the floor, though just 2-of-9 from the outside. CSC committed 17 turnovers and made just 4-of-17 from the outside.
Metro State will host Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday at 3 p.m.
