KEARNEY, Neb. - No. 23 Metro State jumped out to a 24-point halftime lead and held on for a 73-63 win at Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday night on the road. The Roadrunners improved to 17-3 overall and 10-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Lopers fell to 9-11 overall and 4-8 in the RMAC.
Donte Nicholas (Washington, D.C./Oakton H.S.) notched his third straight 20+ point performance with 22 points to lead Metro State. He hit 8-of-15 from the floor and 4-of-5 at the line. He also added four rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) scored 10 points off the bench and added three steals. The sophomore, who broke Metro State's single game scoring record on Jan. 15 with 40 points at New Mexico Highlands, was held to under 10 points in each of the past three games after scoring in double figures in each of the first 16 games.
Glenn Miller (Sacramento, Calif./Foothill H.S.) and
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) each scored eight points and
Brian Minor (Clovis, Calif./Clovis H.S.) added seven. Miller was making his first career start and also had a team-high seven rebounds. Minor and #A.J. Flournoy# led the Roadrunners with three assists each.
Metro State put together its most dominating half of play in recent years in the first half. The Roadrunners led 41-17 at the break, holding the Lopers to just 17.9 percent shooting, while burying 52.9 percent of their own shots. It was the first time since Dec. 19, 2006, that Metro State held an opponent to less than 20 percent shooting in a half. The 17 points was the lowest point total in a half this season for a Metro State opponent.
Nicholas opened the second half with the first five points for the Roadrunners as they took an early 27-point lead in the second half, but UNK closed the game on a 22-6 run over the final seven minutes.
Metro State will travel to Chadron State for a 4 p.m. game on Saturday.
