Roadrunners Go Cold in Final Minutes of Loss at Kearney

KEARNEY, Neb. -
The Metro State women's basketball went scoreless in the final 5:11 of the second half as Nebraska-Kearney came from behind to win 68-64 on Thursday evening in Kearney, Neb.  The loss dropped the Roadrunners to 11-9 overall and 6-6 in the RMAC, while the Lopers improved to 6-13 overall and 5-7 in the RMAC.

The teams remained even through halftime as UNK held a 38-36 lead.  The Lopers went up 49-44 five minutes into the second half, but Metro State climbed back and took the lead after an 11-2 run put the Roadrunners in front 56-51 with just over nine minutes to play.

Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.)'s fastbreak layup following her steal at the 5:11 mark was the final basket of the night for Metro State as it took a 64-60 lead.  The Lopers closed the game on an 8-0 run, hitting 8-of-10 at the free throw line in the final 2:44.  Metro State shot 0-for-7 from the floor, 0-for-2 at the line, and turned the ball over three times following Valencia's basket.

Valencia finished the game with 11 points, shooting 4-for-9 from the floor, but fouled out with 40 seconds left in the game.

Chelsea Williamson (Boulder, Colo./Boulder H.S.) scored a game-high 16 points.  Candice Kohn (Midland, Texas/Midland Christian H.S.) added 13 points, hitting 3-of-5 from the outside.  Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) posted her sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 13 rebounds.  Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) added six assists.

Debi Johnson led UNK with 15 points and hit 4-of-9 from the outside as the Lopers buried six 3-pointers.  UNK shot 42 percent from the floor and held a 35-33 rebounding advantage, but Metro State forced 19 turnovers to stay in the game.

Metro State travels to Chadron State for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.

Game Notes: The Roadrunners have lost six straight to Nebraska-Kearney (last win was Feb. 17, 2007 at Kearney) ... Metro State is now 2-6 this season when its opponent shoots between .400 and .499 ... oddly, Metro State is just 2-4 this season when committing 15 or fewer turnovers after turning the ball over just 12 times on Thursday ... Kohn's 13 points tied the second-most for the sophomore transfer this season ... her season-high is 17 points on Dec. 18 ... Kohn also scored 13 on Nov. 21 against University of the Southwest ... Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) has reached double digits in rebounds in each of the past five games and seven of the past eight games ... Cervantes was held to six points, the first time she has scored less than 10 points since Dec. 30, a streak of eight games ... Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) has scored in double figures in seven consecutive games.
