DURANGO – Metro State stretched its lead atop the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference to two games as the Roadrunners won 85-78 on the road at Fort Lewis on Friday evening. Metro State improved to 14-2 overall and 11-1 in the RMAC, while FLC fell to 13-3 and 9-3.
Metro State outscored the Skyhawks 15-8 in the final two minutes, breaking a 70-70 tie on a 3-pointer by freshman
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.), who scored a career high 24 points, hitting 5-of-7 from the outside and 7-of-9 at the line. Jefferson also made all four of his free throw attempts in the final minute as the Roadrunners connected on 8-of-9 at the stripe in the last minute to seal the win.
Metro State took a 34-33 lead into halftime after shooting just 37.9 percent in the first half.
Quaran Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends' Central H.S.) led all scorers with nine points at the break.
Jefferson and
Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) combined to hit 3-pointers on the first three possessions of the second half and Metro State built a seven-point lead with 16:38 left. A 12-4 run by the Skyhawks put them in front 60-55 with 9:18 to go in the game. The score went back-and-forth until Jefferson's 3-pointer with just under two minutes to play.
Evans matched Jefferson's 24 points, hitting 4-of-6 from downtown as Metro State hit a season-high 10 3-pointers in just 16 attempts. With Evans and Jefferson's 24 each marked the second time this season that two Roadrunners scored 20 or more points in the same game. Jefferson also had six assists and six rebounds.
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) scored 14 points and had seven rebounds.
Glenn Miller (Sacramento, Calif./Foothill H.S.) scored 10 points and had a game-high eight boards. Johnson also scored 13 points and he and #A.J. Flournoy# each had four assists as the Roadrunners went off for a season-high 21 assists as a team.
Metro State committed just 12 turnovers and forced 14. The rebounding was even at 36-36 for each team and Metro State shot 48.2 percent, while allowing the Skyhawks to hit at 50.8 percent. The difference in the game came at the line as the Roadrunners hit 21-of-28 (.750) at the stripe and FLC made just 12-of-28 (.429).
The Roadrunners will travel to Adams State for an 8 p.m. game on Saturday.
