Men's basketball runs past Colorado College with balanced attack

DENVER - Nine different players scored for No. 10 Metro State as the host Roadrunners topped Colorado College 71-43 on Tuesday night in non-conference action. The Roadrunners improved to 5-0 this season, while the Tigers fell to 0-3.

It is Metro State's first 5-0 start since 2004-05.

The Roadrunners were led by Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.), who scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting and added eight rebounds. Tyler Cooper (Huntington Beach, Calif./Christian Heritage H.S.) was perfect from the floor, burying all four 3-point attempts for 12 points and adding two rebounds and two assists. Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) and Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) each scored 10.

Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.), Isaiah Boyd (Brooklyn, N.Y./Canarsie H.S.) and Derrick January (Long Beach, Calif./Dominguez H.S.) each scored six. Boyd had a game-high 10 rebounds as well, and Miller led the team with three assists. January and Jefferson both had three steals.

Metro State forced 19 turnovers and committed just nine, while also outrebounding the Tigers 35-26.

Morse led the Roadrunners to a 33-20 halftime lead with 10 points and six rebounds, despite the team shooting just 38.2 percent in the first half.  Metro State went on a 12-0 run near the end of the half.

Metro State quickly doubled its halftime lead of 15, pushing the lead to 30 at 56-26 with 10:23 left. The lead got larger as Metro State opened the second half on a 32-10 run, leading 65-30 with 6:36 to play. The Roadrunners held their largest lead at 36 points with 4:53 to go after two free throws by January pushed the score to 69-33.

Metro State shot 64 percent in the second half, including 4-of-6 from the outside.

The Roadrunners will be in action again on Friday, Dec. 2, opening Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at home against New Mexico Highlands.
