Men's soccer suffers tough loss in RMAC Championship

Box Score Box Score

DURANGO, Colo. -
Metro State fell 2-1 on Sunday at No. 3 Fort Lewis in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship on a snowy day in Durango, Colo.  The Roadrunners fell to 14-6-1 and FLC improved to 19-1-0.

Fabian Kling scored both goals for the Skyhawks. He scored the first goal of the game at 8:05 off a corner kick.

Marc Herschberger (Westminster, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) evened the score 17 minutes later, putting in the rebound off Andrew Mejia (Littleton, Colo./Mullen H.S.)'s blocked shot.

Kling scored again, amid a lot of controversy, at 42:58. His header off another corner kick bounced off the crossbar and into goalkeeper Shailer Thomas (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington H.S.)' hands, appearing never to enter the goal. But the referee ruled the ball crossed the goal line, despite protests from Metro State.

The Skyhawks played keep-away for much of the second half, though Metro State had several opportunities to tie the game, including a shot from Herschberger in the 76th minute that hit the post.

The Roadurnners outshot FLC 6-0 in the final 15 minutes and 19-13 in the game.

Thomas made six saves in the game.

Thomas, Brenden Hughes (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.), Marc Herschberger (Westminster, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) and Andrew Mejia (Littleton, Colo./Mullen H.S.) were all selected to the RMAC All-Tournament team.

Metro State will find out if its season will continue at 5 p.m. on Monday during the NCAA Tournament selection show at ncaa.com.
