Clutch free throws help men's basketball to road win

Box Score CHADRON, Neb. - No. 2 Metro State made 9-of-10 at the free throw line in the final 2:30 and escaped Chadron State with a 66-62 win in front of a raucous crowd in Chadron, Neb., on Saturday night. The Roadrunners improved to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Eagles fell to 1-7 and 1-3.

Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) responded with 18 points after shooting just 3-of-19 on Friday, night. He hit all four of his free throw attempts in the final 1:40 and led the team with eight rebounds and added three assists.

Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) scored a season-high 17 points, made three 3-pointers, and hit 4-of-4 at the line with a team-high four assists. Paul Brotherson (Sydney, Australia/Westfields Sports High) scored 10 points and had five rebounds.

Tyler Cooper (Huntington Beach, Calif./Christian Heritage H.S.) buried 3-of-4 from the outside and scored nine points off the bench. He helped the team make 9-of-22 from the outside as all three of the team's post players fouled out.

Metro State committed a season-low seven turnovers and forced 13.

The Roadrunners jumped out to a 13-0 lead seven minutes into the game and led 30-16 at halftime. Evans led all players with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists at the break. A strong Metro defense held CSC to just 23.8 percent shooting, including 1-of-8 from the outside, and forced eight first-half turnovers.

The Eagles opened the second half on a 20-7 run and tied the game at 43-43 with 8:57 left. Cooper buried 3-pointers on Metro's next two possessions for a 49-43 lead and a 3-pointer by Miller on the next possession gave the Roadrunners a 52-45 lead with 6:58 to play.

CSC cut the lead back to 55-52 with under 2:30 remaining. Miller drew a foul near halfcourt with 2:11 left and hit both free throws on the 1-and-1 for a 57-52 lead.

The two teams traded a pair of free throws, but a 3-pointer by Chris Curtis cut Metro's lead to 59-57 with 1:30 left. Evans went to the line and calmly hit both free throws to keep it a two-possession game.

Josh Hatcher then made a layup and drew a foul with 57.1 seconds to go and cut the lead to 61-60 with the free throw.

Miller drove the lane on the next Roadrunners possession and made a tough layup, fighting off contact from a defender that resulted in no call.

Following a missed 3-point attempt by the Eagles with 20 seconds left, a foul was called on Evans as he tried for a loose ball. Kevin McClelland made both free throws with 16.7 seconds left to cut the lead back to 63-62.

Miller took the inbounds pass and dribbled through several defenders, before finding Jefferson open to take nearly 10 seconds off the clock before Jefferson was fouled. The sophomore sunk the first, but missed the second with 7.6 seconds left. CSC stepped on the endline with the rebound, giving Metro the ball back and Miller was fouled with 5.0 seconds left. He then drained both to seal the win.

Metro State will play again at Regis on Saturday before enjoying a 12-day layoff.
