CHADRON, Neb. - Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) hit two free throws with four seconds left and made 5-of-6 at the line in the final 31 seconds as Metro State held on for a 69-65 win at Chadron State on Friday evening. The Roadrunners improved to 18-4 overall and 15-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSC fell to 5-17 and 3-15.
The game was tight the entire way with Metro State holding the largest lead for either team at eight points early in the first half. The Roadrunners ended the first half on a 6-0 run to take a 33-29 lead into halftime.
A 3-pointer by Evans on the first possession stretched the lead to seven, but that was the largest lead of the second half. CSC fought back to take a 39-38 lead with 12:43 left in the game on a 3-pointer by Sammy Hines.
The Roadrunners took a 43-41 lead on a jumper by #A.J. Flournoy# at the 12-minute mark and led the rest of the way. However, the game remained close.
A layup by Kevin McClelland cut Metro State's lead to two points with 1:20 remaining. Evans then hit two free throws with 31 seconds left to stretch the lead to 65-61. Each team traded 1-of-2 at the line to maintain the four-point margin with 15 ticks on the clock.
McClelland came back down and buried a 3-pointer for the Eagles with 10 seconds left to trim the lead to one. After making the first free throw with six seconds left,
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) missed on his second attempt, but Evans grabbed the offensive rebound and sealed the game with two free throws.
Evans finished with a game-high 20 points after hitting 3-of-4 from behind the arc and 7-of-8 at the line. He also had five rebounds. Flournoy and Jefferson each scored 17 points. For Flournoy, it was a season-high scoring total after making all nine of his free throw attempts and adding five boards and three assists. Jefferson hit 4-of-7 from 3-point range and had three assists.
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) had seven points and six rebounds.
Shakir Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey H.S.) had five blocked shots, making him the sixth player in school history to reach 100 blocks in his career. He sits at 103 for his career after Friday's game.
The Roadrunners were outshot 53.3 percent to 43.8 percent and outrebounded 28-to-24. But they committed just six turnovers and forced 14, which led to 18 points off turnovers.
Metro State had just seven players in uniform after injuries to a pair of starters.
Metro State will play at Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday at 8 p.m. (CT).
