DENVER - The Metro State men's basketball team pounded Western New Mexico 90-69 in its highest point total of the season on Tuesday at home in the RMAC Shootout quarterfinals. The Roadrunners improved to 21-6 overall, while Western N.M. fell to 14-16.
Eight of the team's nine players scored and four reached double figures.
Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) had his most efficient game of the season, scoring a game-high 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting, while adding four rebounds and four steals.
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) added 18 points, burying 6-of-11 from the outside.
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) had 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists, shooting 4-of-6 from the floor and at the line. #A.J. Flournoy# scored 10 points and tied Morse's team-high with four assists.
Shakir Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey H.S.) scored nine points and had seven rebounds.
Glenn Miller (Sacramento, Calif./Foothill H.S.) added eight points and seven boards.
Quaran Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends' Central H.S.) added six and
Paul Brotherson (Sydney, Australia/Westfields Sports High) scored three points, scoring his first points since Jan. 29 after missing six games with an injury.
The Roadrunners drilled 11-of-22 from downtown, a season-high for 3-pointers. Metro State also shot 50 percent overall from the floor and outrebounded WNMU 39-29, while committing just eight turnovers--all in the second half.
The Mustangs stuck with Metro State for the first 10 minutes, but a 20-4 run over six minutes stretched the lead to 37-20 with four minutes left before halftime. After leading by 19 points with just under two minutes left, the Roadrunners settled for a 43-28 lead at halftime after not committing a turnover in the first half.
The lead was built up to 32 points at 78-46 with 8:28 left in the game after a 3-point play by
Shakir Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey H.S.).
Metro State will face Fort Lewis on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the semifinals in Pueblo at the State Fair Events Center.
