Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS - No. 5 Metro State used a hot start and shot 25-of-26 (.962) at the line to hold off UC-Colorado Springs 89-78 on the road on Saturday night in Colorado Springs. The Roadrunners improved to 15-1 overall and 10-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while UCCS fell to 7-10 and 5-6.
Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) scored a season-high 28 points (17 in the second half), hitting 8-of-16 from the floor and 11-of-11 at the line, and added a season-high 11 rebounds for his seventh career double-double.
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.), fifth in Division II in double-doubles, recorded his eighth of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds. He hit 7-of-13 from the floor and 7-of-8 at the line.
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) scored 12 points and a team-high three assists.
Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) scored nine,
Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) had eight and
Paul Brotherson (Sydney, Australia/Westfields Sports High) added seven.
Metro got off to one of its best starts this season, leading by 20 points just 10 minutes into the game and building its lead up to 42-20 with 6:43 left, but UCCS went on a 12-2 run to cut the lead to 12. Evans sent the Roadrunners into halftime with a 52-38 lead after a reverse dunk on a breakaway in the closing seconds.
Both teams shot the ball well in the first half, with Metro connecting at a 51.5 percent mark and UCCS making half of its shots. However, the Roadrunners outrebounded UCCS 24-9 to control the tempo.
Three Metro State players scored in double figures in the first half, led by Morse with 16 and eight rebounds, Evans with 11 and Jefferson with 10.
A 19-9 run by the Mountain Lions midway through the second half cut the lead to 73-68 with 2:52 left. Baskets by Kay and Evans on the next two Metro possessions pushed the lead back to nine and the Roadrunners made all 10 of their free throws in the final 1:07 to secure the victory.
Metro shot 49.2 percent for the game and outrebounded UCCS 41-25. Metro State also outscored UCCS 20-5 on second-chance points.
The Roadrunners will host Fort Lewis at 7 p.m. on Friday.
