Box Score GUNNISON, Colo. - Western State surrendered a 17-point lead, but recovered to upset No. 3 Metro State 70-66 on Friday night in Gunnison, Colo. The Roadrunners dropped to 17-2 overall and 12-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while WSC improved to 8-10 and 6-8.
WSC led by 17 points several times in the first half and still had a 10-point lead 6:43 remaining in the game. But the Roadrunners responded with a 12-2 run to tie the game with 2:40 left.
Metro had several chances to take the lead in the final two minutes, but came up empty each time. The Mountaineers regained the lead for good with 1:23 left after a free throw by Alex Hart put them up 65-64.
Travis Shepherd hit four free throws in the final 5.8 seconds to hold on for the win.
The loss overshadowed one of the best games in the career of
Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.), who scored 29 points on 12-of-22 shooting and hit 5-of-6 at the line, while pulling down eight rebounds.
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) added 16 points for Metro and
Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.) had 13.
Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) scored eight as only four players scored in the game for the Roadrunners.
Metro State got off to an atrocious start to the game, trailing 25-8 midway through the first half. However, the Roadrunners closed the half on a 19-12 run to cut the halftime deficit to 39-30. WSC shot 57.7 percent in the first half, aided by 22 points in the paint, and outrebounded Metro 16-11.
Evans scored 14 points in the first half on 7-of-12 shooting.
Metro shot 37.9 percent in game, but stayed in by winning the turnover battled 18-8. WSC outrebounded the Roadrunners 33-29, just the third time this season they have been outrebounded.
Weylan Towns led the Mountaineers with 14 points and Alex Hart added 13.
Metro State will look to respond at Colorado Mesa with a 7:30 p.m. game on Saturday.
