Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. - Top-ranked Metro State was upset 68-57 at No. 12 Colorado Mines on Friday night in Golden, Colo., as the Roadrunners dropped to 12-1 overall and 7-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. CSM improved to 11-1 and 7-1 as the two teams moved into a tie for first place in the RMAC.
The Orediggers used a 12-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Trevor Ritchie with 3:36 left in the second half to break a 51-51 tie and hold on for the win. CSM shot 6-of-7 from the floor, including three 3-pointers, and 6-of-8 at the line over the final 8:12. Metro shot just 2-of-14 during that same time.
It is the second time Mines has knocked off Metro State when ranked No. 1 as the then-unranked Orediggers topped No. 1 Metro 74-71 in Golden on Jan. 22, 2005.
It was also Metro State's third consecutive loss in Golden.
Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) led the Roadrunners with 20 points, but hit just 8-of-25 from the floor.
Paul Brotherson (Sydney, Australia/Westfields Sports High) and
Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.) each had 10 points.
The Roadrunners shot a season-low 30.6 percent from the floor and was outrebounded (36-35) for just the third time all season.
Metro jumped out to a 9-2 start just four minutes into the game, but the Orediggers quickly closed the gap and Metro went into halftime with a 30-28 lead. Metro had no answer in the middle for Trevor Wages, who had 10 points and 10 rebounds at half for the Orediggers, helping them to a 21-17 rebounding margin.
Evans led the Roadrunners with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting at half.
The second half was back-and-forth until the Orediggers caught fire late. CSM broke a 51-51 tie with 6:04 left, going on a 12-2 run, as they hit three 3-pointers over a two-and-a-half minute span to take a 63-53 lead with 3:36 left. It was the first double-digit deficit for Metro all season.
The Roadrunners tried to crawl back, but were unsuccessful. Jefferson hit two free throws with 2:32 left, but Metro went scoreless on its next possession and two more Oredigger free throws pushed the lead back to 10 with 1:38 left at 65-55, and they continued to make 4-of-4 at the line in the final 1:14 to seal the win.
Brett Green led CSM with 22 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including a perfect 4-of-4 from the outside. Wages finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds and Dale Minschwaner added 11 points.
Mines made 6-of-8 from the outside as a team in the game and shot 45.8 percent from the floor.
Metro State will look to get back on track at Colorado Christian at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The last time Metro State lost back-to-back game was during the 2009-10 season.
