New-look men's basketball rebounds from Friday's loss with win at CCU

Box Score LAKEWOOD - Top-ranked Metro State topped Colorado Christian 73-59 on the road on Saturday, after dropping its first game of the season on Friday at No. 12 Colorado Mines. The Roadrunners improved to 13-1 overall and 8-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CCU fell to 2-11 and 1-8.

Head coach Derrick Clark sent a message to his normal lineup after Friday's loss, starting Sam Porter (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.), Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) and Tyler Cooper (Huntington Beach, Calif./Christian Heritage H.S.) with normal starters Paul Brotherson (Sydney, Australia/Westfields Sports High) and Jonathan Morse (Boulder, Colo./Fairview H.S.). Derrick January (Long Beach, Calif./Dominguez H.S.) was the only reserve to play in the first half as regulars Reggie Evans (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.), Brandon Jefferson (Flower Mound, Texas/Lewisville H.S.), Demetrius Miller (Flint, Mich./Flint Central H.S.) and Isaiah Boyd (Brooklyn, N.Y./Canarsie H.S.) sat out. Porter had played in just four games as a reserve prior to Saturday. Kay had made two starts and Cooper five.

The freshman Kay finished with a career-high 24 points on 11-of-13 shooting and pulled down 11 rebounds for his second career double-double. Morse scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds. Cooper also had a career high with 14 points and led the team with three assists. He buried a pair of 3-pointers and hit all four of his free throw attempts.

Brotherson scored seven and Jefferson, who entered the game for 11 minutes in the second half, scored six.

Metro State shot a season-high 58.1 percent and outrebounded the Cougars 40-17.  CCU remained close by burying 11 3-pointers and forcing 16 Roadrunners turnovers.

The new-look lineup took a 33-23 lead into halftime, playing one of the team's best defensive halves of the season. CCU was held to just 36 percent shooting in the first half and was outrebounded 23-9 by the Roadrunners. Metro State's 10 offensive boards led to 12 second-chance points. The Cougars made just one field goal in the first eight minutes, trailing 13-2 early.

Kay led Metro at halftime with 14 points and seven rebounds, matching his season high in scoring in the first half. Morse had nine points and five rebounds.

The Roadrunners quickly built their lead to 17 points at 41-24 with 17 minutes left in the second half. The Cougars came back with hot outside shooting, cutting the lead to 52-48 with 4:25 left. They made seven 3-pointers in the second half. Metro made 14-of-16 at the line in the final two minutes to secure the win.

Abram Ziemer led CCU with 16 points.

The Roadrunners will head to Colorado State-Pueblo for a 7:30 p.m. game on Friday.
