Box Score DENVER - Metro State defeated Colorado Christian 4-0 on Friday afternoon at Auraria Field. The win increased the Roadrunners' record to 8-6-0 and 5-5-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The loss dropped the Cougars to 1-12-0 on the season and 0-9-0 in the RMAC.
Brenden Hughes (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) led the scoring attack for the Roadrunners with two goals on the day. His first goal came in the 18th minute when he knocked in the ball as it was bouncing inside the Cougars' goalie box. The assist on the goal went to
Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.). The play developed when
Kevin Pocalyko (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.) had his shot blocked by the Cougars' goalie David Ilgenfritz and then bounced off several defenders before it found its way to Arrubla who had his own shot attempt blocked. Hughes then ran in and knocked the ball into the back of the net for the early lead.
In the 34th minute,
Marc Herschberger (Westminster, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) scored his eighth goal of the season when he blasted his shot from the top left of the box just inside the near side post under the goalie's outstretched arm. The assist went to
Carlos Mendez (Denver, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) on the play which gave the Roadrunners a 2-0 advantage going into halftime.
The Roadrunners picked up from where they left off in the 59th minute despite a turn in the weather for the worse when Hughes scored his second goal of the game and sixth of the year. He scored this goal by chipping the ball over a charging Ilgenfritz's head into the back of the net. Arrubla picked up his second assist of the game on the score to give the Roadrunners a 3-0 advantage.
Metro State's final goal was scored in the 75th minute when
Andy Lopez (Phoenix/La Joya H.S.) headed in a pass from
Pierce Galan (Phoenix/Seton Catholic H.S.) on a corner kick. The goal was Lopez's fourth of the season and gave the Roadrunners their final goal of the game as they won 4-0.
Metro State had two season highs as a team on Friday as they attempted the most shots of the season when they attempted 27 (24 was the old team high). MSU also had a season high in corner kicks as it bested the old mark of 11 with their 12th of the day.
For the Roadrunners it was a solid defensive effort as neither Roadrunner goalie faced a shot on goal all game, a first since 2010.
Issa Bissau (Denver, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) started his first game of the season and got the victory to give him a record of 1-0 on the season. In the 75th minute, redshirt Freshman
Trevor Obering (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista H.S.) had his first action in his Roadrunners career when he came on in for Bissau in goal.
The Roadrunners will be back in action next Friday when they travel to Colorado Mesa at 4 p.m.
