Men's soccer: Freshmen Berg and Arrubla provide difference on Senior Day

Box Score DENVER - Metro State defeated UC-Colorado Springs 2-1 in double overtime on Sunday afternoon to clinch third place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  On Senior Day for the Roadrunners, it was the freshmen who provided the scoring as Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.) and Dustin Berg (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) scored the two goals.

Freshman Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.) started the scoring in the 17th minute when he scored his 13th goal of the year on a cross from senior Marc Herschberger (Westminster, Colo./Northglenn H.S.).

Metro State held at 1-0 advantage until the 44th minute when the Roadrunners scored an own goal to give the Mountain Lions a goal and tie the game at 1-1.

In the second half, the scoring for either side did not continue however, both sides started trying to increase the intensity and both teams started picking up yellow cards.  In the second half, two yellows and two reds were handed out with one apiece for each team.  The Roadrunners ended the game with three yellows and a red card for Andrew Mejia (Littleton, Colo./Mullen H.S.) after he picked up his second yellow card.

The second half ended in a 1-1 score and the first overtime also remained scoreless.  In the second overtime, Berg scored his second goal of the season.  Berg shot the ball from 30 yards his hard shot to the lower-right corner of the net slipped between the goalkeeper's legs to give the Roadrunners a victory just 39 seconds into the period.

Issa Bissau (Denver, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) had five saves in the game and increased his overall record to 4-0-1 on the season.

Metro State will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting the RMAC Tournament quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m. against No. 6 seed Fort Lewis.
