Men's soccer: MSU's upset bid of No. 3 Regis ends in overtime

Box Score DENVER - Metro State's upset bid at No. 3 Regis fell just short as the host Rangers clipped MSU 3-2 in overtime on Sunday. Metro fell to 7-6-0 overall, while Regis improved to 11-0-1.

Logan Miller gave Regis an early lead just 11 minutes in. But the Roadrunners battled back to tie the game briefly at 1-1 at 43:47. Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.) scored in the center of the box, taking Kevin Pocalyko (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.)'s one-touch pass from Andy Lopez (Phoenix/La Joya H.S.).

But a breakdown on the ensuing kickoff for Regis allowed a go-ahead goal for the Rangers just 10 seconds later, leaving a wide-open shot for Adam Tormoehlen, helping them take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

That score remained until just four minutes left in regulation when Arrubla scored again. Tyler Gillaspie (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert H.S.) played a pass from midfield into the box, finding Jeremy Brooks (Phoenix/Horizon H.S.)' head. The shot was initially saved by the Rangers goalkeeper, but Arrubla was on the goal line to put in the rebound for a 2-2 tie.

Just 1:23 into overtime, Mark Kelly scored for Regis for the 3-2 Rangers victory.

Regis owned a 17-10 shot advantage in the game, but Shailer Thomas (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington H.S.) made six saves for the Roadrunners.

Metro State will host Colorado Christian at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
